What are grilling planks?

Grilling planks are thin pieces of wood, usually cedar, that have been cut into various rectangle sizes for cooking different food.

Grilling planks are becoming an increasingly popular way to cook food on the grill. Not only do they add a unique flavour to your food, they also provide a great way to infuse your food with smoky, woody aromas. They also help to keep the food moist and prevent it from drying out. If you’re looking to try something new on your grill, grilling planks are a great way to go.

How to use a grilling plank

The planks are typically soaked in water for at least 15 minutes before they’re used, to help prevent them from burning.

After they’ve been soaked, the planks can be placed directly on closed grills, hibachi grills or conventional ovens. Once the planks are heated, food can be placed on top and cooked. The planks can be used to cook almost anything that can be grilled, from fish and vegetables to poultry and steak. The plank will slowly smoulder, releasing flavourful smoke that cooks and infuses the food, adding moisture in the process.

Can you reuse a grilling plank?

If the plank is still in good shape after the first use, you can reuse it again. However, it is important to clean the plank after each use to minimise the build-up of bacteria. It is also important to note that the plank will take on the flavour of the previous grilling - and some of the essential oils in the wood will be used up. For these reasons, it's generally recommended to use a new plank.

What are the best grilling planks to buy?

When it comes to purchasing grilling planks, there are a few things to consider.

First, make sure that the planks you buy are made from natural wood, such as cedar or alder. Also, make sure that the planks are labelled “food grade”, as this means that they are safe for use with food. When you’re ready to use your grilling planks, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper soaking and use.
